How to Choose a Doula School
Guiding Light: How to Choose the Best Doula School for You
Becoming a doula is a deeply rewarding path that allows you to support and empower individuals and families during one of the most transformative moments in their lives. But when learning how to choose a doula school, here’s what no one tells you: not all doula training is created equal.
The doula school you choose will shape not just your initial certification, but your entire career trajectory—how you practice, what you believe about birth, how you serve families, and whether you build a sustainable practice or burn out within two years.
I’ve been asked the question countless times over my years as a Student Mentor and Doula Training Facilitator: “How do I choose the right program for me?”
In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly what to look for in a doula school, not just to get certified, but to build a foundation for a thriving, lifelong career in birthwork.
1. Understand Your Motivation (And Your Vision)
Before diving into the search for a doula school, take a moment to get clear on your “why.”
Ask yourself:
- What draws you to doula work? Is it personal birth experience, passion for birth justice, desire to support families, or calling to this sacred work?
- What type of doula do you aspire to be? Birth doula, postpartum doula, bereavement doula, or full-spectrum support?
- What does your ideal doula practice look like in 5 years? Are you building a business, working part-time, serving a specific community, or integrating this with other wellness work?
- What values matter most to you in birth work? Trauma-informed care, cultural responsiveness, evidence-based practice, holistic approaches?
Clarifying your goals and vision will help you choose a school that offers the right training for your specific path.
Some programs are bare-bones certification factories. Others are transformational educational experiences that give you business skills, ongoing mentorship, and a supportive community for your entire career.
Know what you’re looking for before you start shopping.
2. Research Accreditation and Certification Standards
Look for doula schools that are accredited or recognized by reputable doula organizations and certification bodies.
Why accreditation matters:
✓ Your certification will be recognized by hospitals, midwives, and birth centers
✓ You can apply for insurance panels and Medicaid reimbursement in some states
✓ Families can verify your credentials through reputable organizations
✓ You meet professional standards for scope of practice and ethics
✓ Your training is comprehensive and evidence-based
Important questions to ask:
- Is this program accredited by a recognized certification body?
- What certification will I receive upon completion?
At Doula School International, our programs meet the highest standards for professional doula certification and are recognized globally across 20+ countries.
3. Evaluate Curriculum Depth and Breadth
A comprehensive doula training curriculum should cover far more than just “what to do during labor.”
Essential curriculum components:
Birth Doula Training Should Include:
✓ Comprehensive pregnancy, birth, and postpartum physiology
✓ Labor support techniques and comfort measures
✓ Fetal positioning and pelvic biomechanics
✓ Medical procedures, interventions, and informed consent
✓ Evidence-based information on all birth options
✓ Communication and advocacy skills ✓ Trauma-informed care and emotional support
✓ Cultural responsiveness and anti-racism training
✓ Scope of practice and professional ethics
✓ Business development and sustainable practice building
Postpartum Doula Training Should Include:
✓ Newborn care and development
✓ Infant feeding support (breast, bottle, and combination)
✓ Postpartum physical and emotional recovery
✓ Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs)
✓ Family dynamics and sibling adjustment
✓ Practical household support skills
✓ Professional boundaries and self-care
Red flags in curriculum:
❌ Only focuses on “natural birth” without covering all birth options
❌ Promotes specific products, protocols, or ideologies
❌ Lacks evidence-based information
❌ Doesn’t address diversity, inclusion, or cultural responsiveness
❌ Ignores business skills and professional development
❌ No training in trauma-informed care
How to Choose a Doula School – Questions to ask:
- Can I see a detailed course outline?
- How many hours of training are included?
- Does the curriculum cover both physiological birth AND medical interventions?
- Is there training on supporting diverse populations and birth preferences?
- What business and professional development is included?
The best doula schools provide comprehensive, balanced education that prepares you for real-world birth work in all its complexity.
4. Investigate Instructors' Qualifications and Experience
Your instructors will shape not just what you learn, but how you approach birth work for your entire career.
What to look for in doula training instructors:
✓ Extensive personal experience attending births (100+ births minimum)
✓ Certification and credentials from reputable organizations
✓ Ongoing continuing education and professional development
✓ Experience teaching and mentoring new doulas
✓ Diverse birth settings experience (hospital, birth center, home)
✓ Trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach
✓ Active doula practice (or recent retirement from practice)
✓ Positive reputation in the birth community
Questions to ask:
- How many births have the lead instructors attended?
- What are their certifications and credentials?
- Do they have experience in diverse birth settings?
- How do they stay current with evidence-based practice?
- Can I speak with previous students about their experience?
Red flags:
❌ Instructors with minimal birth experience
❌ Promoting personal birth philosophy as “the only way”
❌ No ongoing education or professional development
❌ Unwilling to share credentials or experience
❌ Negative reviews from past students
At Doula School International our instructors bring deep expertise, ongoing professional development, and genuine commitment to student success.
5. Consider Class Format and Flexibility
Doula training is offered in various formats and the right one depends on your learning style, schedule, and life circumstances.
Training format options:
In-Person Intensive Workshops:
- Pros: Hands-on practice, immediate feedback, networking, immersive experience
- Cons: Requires travel, fixed schedule, childcare challenges, less flexibility
Live Virtual Training:
- Pros: Real-time interaction, no travel required, community connection, flexible location
- Cons: Requires reliable internet, scheduled attendance, less hands-on practice
Self-Paced Online Learning:
- Pros: Complete flexibility, work at your own pace, review materials repeatedly
- Cons: Requires self-discipline, less community connection, no real-time feedback
Hybrid/Tri-Modal Training (The Best of Everything):
- Pros: Maximum flexibility, combines live interaction with self-paced study, accommodates diverse learning styles and schedules
- Cons: Requires comfort with technology
Questions to ask:
- What format options are available?
- If online, is there live interaction or just recorded content?
- Can I access materials after completion?
- Are there opportunities for hands-on practice?
- How is the community-building aspect facilitated?
At Doula School International, we pioneered tri-modal training during COVID-19, offering in-person intensives, live virtual sessions, and self-paced online learning. This approach has allowed us to train doulas in 20+ countries while maintaining high-quality, interactive education.
Choose a format that fits your life because completing your training is more important than choosing the “perfect” format.
6. Assess Cost and True Value (Not Just Price)
Doula training costs typically range from $500 to $3,000+ depending on the program, format, and what’s included.
Important: Don’t just look at the price tag. Look at what you’re actually getting.
What should be included in your training cost:
✓ Comprehensive curriculum and materials
✓ Access to instructors for questions and support
✓ Certification or eligibility for certification
✓ Practice guidelines and templates
✓ Business resources and marketing materials
✓ Community access and networking opportunities
✓ Ongoing support and mentorship
What often costs extra (ask before enrolling):
- Certification application fees
- Required textbooks or additional reading
- Liability insurance
- Professional membership dues
- Continuing education requirements
- Business materials and supplies
Financial considerations:
- Are payment plans available?
- Are there scholarships or financial assistance options?
- What’s the total cost including all fees and requirements?
- What’s the refund policy if I need to withdraw?
Value-based thinking:
A $1,500 program that provides comprehensive training, ongoing mentorship, business development, and lifetime community access may be a far better investment than a $600 program that gives you a certificate and nothing else.
Think about ROI: Your training investment should pay for itself within your first 2-3 clients. If you’re paying $2,000 for training and can charge $2,000+ per birth after certification, that’s an excellent return on investment.
Questions to ask:
- What exactly is included in the tuition?
- Are there additional fees I should plan for?
- Do you offer payment plans?
- What support do I receive after certification?
7. Read Reviews and Student Testimonials
Past student experiences tell you everything about what your experience will actually be like.
Where to find authentic reviews:
- Google Business reviews
- Facebook page reviews and comments
- Doula community forums and groups
- Direct conversations with program alumni
- Social media comments and engagement
What to look for in reviews:
Positive indicators:
✓ Specific examples of what students loved
✓ Mentions of instructor support and accessibility
✓ Success stories from graduates building practices
✓ Comments about community and ongoing support
✓ Appreciation for comprehensive curriculum
✓ Students who feel prepared and confident
Red flags:
❌ Complaints about lack of support
❌ Curriculum that didn’t match promises
❌ Instructors who were unavailable or dismissive
❌ Hidden fees or unexpected costs
❌ Graduates who don’t feel prepared for real births
❌ Lack of post-training support
Questions to ask current students or alumni:
- Did the training meet your expectations?
- How accessible and supportive were the instructors?
- Do you feel prepared to support births independently?
- What surprised you (positively or negatively) about the program?
- Would you recommend this training to others? Why or why not?
- What support have you received since completing training?
At Doula School International, we’re proud of our student success stories and the thriving practices our graduates have built across the globe. We encourage prospective students to connect with our alumni community to hear firsthand experiences.
8. Evaluate Community and Networking Opportunities
Your doula school community will be one of your most valuable resources throughout your career.
What a strong doula school community provides:
✓ Peer support and encouragement
✓ Case study discussions and problem-solving
✓ Referral network and collaboration opportunities
✓ Ongoing education through shared resources
✓ Mentorship from experienced doulas
✓ Accountability and motivation
✓ Lifelong friendships with like-minded birth workers
Questions to ask:
- Is there a private community group for students and alumni?
- Are there regular meetups, calls, or continuing education events?
- How do students stay connected after graduation?
- Is there a mentorship program pairing new doulas with experienced ones?
- Are there opportunities for collaboration and referrals?
- Can I connect with alumni before enrolling?
Red flags:
❌ No community infrastructure
❌ Students feel isolated during and after training
❌ No ongoing connection or support
❌ Competitive rather than collaborative culture
At Doula School International, community is at the heart of everything we do. Our global network of 6,500+ doulas provides ongoing support, collaboration, and connection that extends far beyond certification.
9. Ensure Alignment with Your Values
How to choose a doula school matters because your doula training will shape your philosophy and approach to birth work. Choose a school whose values resonate with yours.
Important values to consider:
Approach to Birth:
- Evidence-based and balanced, or ideology-driven?
- Respectful of all birth choices, or promoting one “right way”?
- Trauma-informed and healing-centered?
- Culturally responsive and anti-racist?
Professional Standards:
- Clear scope of practice and professional boundaries?
- Ethical business practices and client relationships?
- Commitment to ongoing education and growth?
Inclusivity and Accessibility:
- LGBTQ+ affirming and inclusive language?
- Serving diverse communities and honoring all families?
- Addressing barriers to access and birth equity?
Teaching Philosophy:
- Empowering students as professionals?
- Encouraging critical thinking, not just memorization?
- Supportive and nurturing learning environment?
Questions to ask:
- What is your philosophy on birth and birth support?
- How do you approach diversity, equity, and inclusion?
- What do you teach about scope of practice and professional boundaries?
- How do you support students with different beliefs or backgrounds?
This is crucial: If a school’s values don’t align with yours, you’ll feel this misalignment throughout your training and career. Choose a program where you feel seen, respected, and inspired.
At Doula School International, we’re committed to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, evidence-based education that honors all birth choices and serves diverse communities globally.
10. Investigate Post-Training Support and Resources
Your relationship with your doula school shouldn’t end when you receive your certificate.
Essential post-training support:
✓ Mentorship Programs: Pairing new doulas with experienced mentors for guidance through early births
✓ Continuing Education: Ongoing workshops, webinars, and training opportunities to expand your skills
✓ Business Development: Resources, templates, and coaching for building a sustainable practice
✓ Community Access: Lifetime access to student groups and networking opportunities
✓ Certification Support: Help navigating certification applications and requirements
✓ Resource Library: Access to updated materials, forms, and educational content
✓ Referral Network: Connections to backup doulas, specialists, and collaborative partnerships
Questions to ask:
- What support is available after I complete training?
- Is there ongoing mentorship or guidance?
- Can I access updated materials and resources?
- Are there continuing education opportunities?
- Will I have lifetime community access?
- Do you help with business development and marketing?
Red flags:
❌ “You’re on your own after certification”
❌ No ongoing resources or community
❌ Additional fees for any post-training support
❌ Instructors unavailable for questions after graduation
The best doula schools invest in your long-term success—not just your initial certification.
11. Trust Your Intuition (It Knows)
After all the research, comparisons, and questions—trust your gut.
Your intuition will tell you:
- Do I feel welcomed and valued by this school?
- Do I feel inspired and excited about this training?
- Can I see myself thriving in this community?
- Do I trust these instructors to guide my education?
- Does this feel aligned with who I am and who I want to become?
Pay attention to:
- How you’re treated during the inquiry process
- How responsive and helpful the school is with your questions
- How you feel when you talk to alumni or current students
- Whether the school’s energy matches yours
Important questions to ask yourself:
- Do I feel comfortable asking questions?
- Am I being pressured to enroll, or given space to decide?
- Does this school feel like a good fit for me personally?
- Can I imagine myself succeeding in this program?
If something feels off, trust that feeling. There are many excellent doula training programs—find the one that feels right for YOU.
If something feels exciting and aligned, trust that too. When you know, you know.
Choosing Your Path Forward
How to choose a doula school is one of the most significant decisions on your journey to becoming a compassionate, knowledgeable, and effective doula.
This decision will impact:
- The quality of your training and preparation
- Your confidence and competence as a doula
- The community that supports you throughout your career
- Your philosophy and approach to birth work
- Your ability to build a sustainable practice
- The families you’ll serve for years to come
Take your time. Do your research. Ask questions. Trust your intuition.
And remember: the best doula school isn’t necessarily the cheapest, the closest, or the most popular. The best doula school is the one that aligns with your values, supports your growth, and sets you up for long-term success.
