– Messaging to Students: Alabama does not currently have a statewide Medicaid doula benefit, though community doula programs are active in the state and a committee began exploring Medicaid coverage in 2023. DSI will monitor developments and provide guidance for Alabama-based students if coverage is established.

– Status notes: Not currently reimbursing via Medicaid. However, adjacent activity exists: Alabama’s Dept of Mental Health funds BirthWell Partners Community Doula Project (serving pregnant people with substance use disorder). A committee including March of Dimes and Women’s Foundation of Alabama began exploring Medicaid coverage in 2023. No formal pathway yet.
