How does TENS help my clients?
We understand that clients benefit from having a variety of options to support them throughout labor and birth.
- The key behind how TENS works lies in the Gate Control Theory. This theory suggests that the intensity of pain we experience is influenced by the balance between painful and non-painful (or pleasant) signals reaching the brain.
- Pain perception can be lessened by “closing the gate”—this can be done by increasing pleasant or non-painful stimuli, decreasing painful input, or shifting focus through distraction.
- It has been shown to help shorten the length of labor and reduce the need for epidurals.
